The finished quilt

I finished my Plain Spoken quilt. Here is the top.

And here's the back.

And here's a close-up of the quilting and fabrics.

finishing the quilt ended up being rather frustrating. I made my own seam binding. I don't know if I will try that again. if I do, I will take the advice from the Modern Quilt Workshop book and not make it on the bias. every quilt so far my binding has ended up uneven and ripply. making my own binding only aggravated these problems, and took more time to do.

I was thinking about what I have learned from each quilt so far. with the baby quilt, I figured out the basics of piecing. with the big zig, I improved on my quilting. with this one, I think the major lesson is that I am not a very good quilter. my blocks don't line up very well, the colors feel a smidge off, the quilting doesn't add as much to the quilt as I hoped it would, the binding is messy.

I think I might take a break before I start another quilt. maybe focus on things like making a woolly mammoth.

I love it.
And who cares about lining up and riply and whatnot.
It's handmade, with love.
End of story.

It's amazing! So good! I love the colors -- did you have a "big idea" for your choices?

Also, can I add you to the Modern Quilt-Along?

I just found this via Google, looking for examples of the plain spoken quilt. I think it's great! I think you're wrong about the colors being "off", and I actually really like your choice in quilting. Meh, the binding - what can I say, I wouldn't have gotten nearly as far! I'm impressed with your quilt ... I'd *love* to be able to put that on my bed.

I think you are being way too hard on yourself. All three of your quilts are beautiful.

You shouldn't expect perfection from yourself for several reasons:
1. You are a fairly new quilter.
2. Nobody is perfect. If you look as carefully at the original quilt as you do on your reproduction, you will find errors on it as well.
3. You are human, and as such you will make mistakes.
4. Every quilt has its unique characteristics. That is why you make them rather than buy a factory made one.

I have only recently found your blog and have been reading the archives. I love this quilt. I also quilt but I do it by hand. Can you machine quilt with a regular sewing machine? Do I need anything special?
