ice cream cone cupcake!

so I regularly use cupcakes as a way to make friends and influence people at work. years of plying folks with cupcakes has some nice side benefits, as people repay this with fine gifts of pies and meatballs and such in return. today, I received a delightful cupcake themed present - a set of silicone pans for making ice cream cone shaped cupcakes. (see here for an image of the molds.)

so I of course had to try them out tonight.

I had a marble cake mix in the cupboard, so I used that to start. I filled the bottoms with the yellow cake, then used the marble chocolate mix as a layer on top, with the idea that it would end up resembling a cone with chocolate ice cream on top. I then frosted them with chocolate frosting, piped to look like soft serve ice cream. they don't look nearly as beautiful as the catalog picture but they're pretty cute.

does anyone have tips for using silicone molds? I find them challenging. I sprayed them with nonstick spray and let them cool a long time, but even so, I only got about two-thirds of the cupcakes out successfully. should I have baked them until crispy? they were otherwise done, but maybe if I had overcooked them a bit more? would a nonstick spray with flour help?

on the plus side, broken cupcake tops are still tasty.

I've only used simple silicon molds, but found a "dusting" of flour helps (drag molds through flour container and shake off before filling). Those cupcakes are a great shape. Do they sit upright in a tin or do you HAVE to eat them right away? I'd go for the eating myself.
