fruits and veggies

On Wednesday, I went to Boulder's Farmers' Market. I thought it would be fun but really it was just annoying to waste my time fighting crowds for the opportunity to pay 400% markup for vegetables. Seriously, a bunch of beets was $6. I can buy locally grown beets at the grocery store for a buck or buck and a half.

On Saturday, I was in neighboring Longmont and decided to stop at the farmers' market. Apparently I don't learn from my mistakes. But I figured that maybe the folks that sell cabbage rolls (not the traditional Polish kind but close) might be there, so it seemed like it might be worth a stop. I found the vendor I was looking for, but then was lured over to a vegetable booth that was closing up for the day and offering a bag of as much produce as you wanted for $10.

Awesome!

Here's the haul:

I am making good progress on it so far.

I used the cukes to make some refrigerator pickles using my mom's recipe.

I made a yellow beet and carrot salad:

At the grocery store, a bag of plums was a buck so I picked up a bag and made plum cake using this recipe.

It is a fine little recipe. I don't believe that something can really be too sweet, but with a cake like this I can see the merits of Just Somewhat Sweet. I did top it with a streusel instead of the melted butter topping in the recipe which I think was a good move.

Looks like you found a bargain. The veggie dishes all look tastey. The cake looked very yummy but then I checked the recipe and saw why it looked so good....just a few calories there.

It's about 200 calories for a 3x3 inch slice - so more calories than one cookie but less calories than two cookies.

I don't think that is so bad...
